添削例として、『分析と解答例』で紹介した一橋大学の｢論説・評論型｣の問題を扱ってみる。

○ 問　題　(2002年　一橋大)

Write at least 100 words of English about the following topic.

People live longer now, so the retirement age should be raised to 70.

○ Mさんの答案

I don’t think that the normal retirement age should be raised to 70.

There are two reasons. First, if the normal retirement age was raised to 70, young people would have a hard time to get their jobs. Certainly, young people don’t know the business as well as old people. And, many companies need skilled businessmen. But, we have to bring up the next generation. So, many companies should offer jobs to young people. Second, personal computers are progressing today. To do the work smoothly, the person need to make the best use of personal computers, so it is fit for young people.

Therefore, I don’t think that the normal retirement age should be raised to 70.

Mさんが定年を70歳に引き上げることに反対する理由は２つ、つまり若者が仕事に就きにくくなるということと、コンピューターの操作が得意な若者を企業のために利用しにくくなるということ。この2点を軸に全面的に書き換えた添削例が下である。

If the retirement age was raised to 70, elderly people would stay long in their posts, and as a result, many young people would have a lot of difficulty getting jobs. This is an age of severe competition, so it is understandable that companies need senior skilled workers who don’t need to be trained. However, in order to be really competitive, companies must prepare for the future by training young people. In this sense, to raise the retirement age to 70 would not be a good company policy. Besides, compared with senior workers, most young people are good at using computers, which are indispensable tools in the world of business. In view of this, the retirement age 70 would not be a good idea.

Considering these facts, the idea of raising the normal retirement age to 70 is unacceptable.

Mさんの答案の反省点

与えられた問題は論説型です。このタイプの問題には「一定の形式」、つまり「序論（introduction）→本論（body）→結論（conclusion）」で応答するのが普通です。Mさんの答案はその形式を守っていますから、その点は評価することができます。

しかし、Mさんの答案はintroduction→body→conclusion のそれぞれの区切りを「改行」によって示していますが、ビジネスの手紙ならともかくとして、論説文では通常改行ではなく「字下げ」、つまり英語でいうところの「インデント（indent）」で処理します。どの程度 indent するかは定まった決まりはありませんが、通常は2、3文字分です。

introduction は全体の方向性を示す部分ですから、この部分に There are two reasons for this. を入れたほうがよいでしょう。

There are two reasons for this. のような書き方は、与えられた論題についての自分の賛否の理由を「並列的に」述べることを示していますから、当然、あとにはFirst, …そしてSecond, …が続かなければなりません。Mさんの答案もそうなっていますね。

問題は body の中身です。「～するのに苦労する」は “have a hard time ～ing” とすべきですが、それを “have a hard time to ～” となっているなど、語法的な間違いもいくつか見られます。しかし、それよりも重大なのは論述の中身です。

例えば、Certainly, young people don’t know the business as well as old people. And, many companies need skilled businessmen. を見てみましょう。Mさんは頭の中で「今の会社は即戦力になる技能のある人を求めているが、若い人はビジネスのことをあまり知らないから就職するのに不利になっているのだ」と考えたはずです。ところが実際の英文ではこの論理の流れが逆転しているのです。これではわかりづらいですから、Many companies need skilled businessmen. を最初にもってくるべきなのです。

論理の流れが不自然なところは、To do the work smoothly, the person need to make the best use of personal computers, so it is fit for young people. にもあります。この英文では so it is fit for young people が前の部分とどのような関係にあるのか不明瞭です。前の部分の「結果」なのか「目的」なのかはっきりしないのです。

さらに、「説明が足りない」ということも気になります。説明がくどすぎるのも問題ですが、足りないのも問題です。To do the work smoothly, the person need to make the best use of personal computers, so it is fit for young people. をもう一度取り上げてみます。Ｍさんは「若者はコンピューターが得意だから、それを最大限に利用すればいい、そうすれば会社の仕事も効率があがるはずだ」と考えたのでしょう。ところが上の文は、Mさんの頭の中ではわかっていても、他人に円滑に伝わるような説明にはなっていないのです。添削された答案では And unlike elderly people, many young people have a good command of computers, so in this point they can be more useful to companies. となっていますが、こちらのほうが論理的に明快ですし、説明も他人に伝わりやすいものになっていると思います。

もう1つ指摘しておきたいことはMさんの答案は与えられた論題である｢定年を70歳に引き上げることの是非｣に間接的に応じてはいるものの、その論題に常に立ち戻っていないということです。隔靴掻痒というか、迂遠なのです。この点について、『全面的に書き換えた添削例』をもう一度見てください。この添削例は、常に70歳定年を念頭に置いて、論題から逸脱することがないように書かれています。多くの受験生はMさんの答案のようになりがちです。この点はくれぐれも気をつけてください。
